Family Dynamics at Ashridge House

A reflection on family relations

The Necessity of Reflecting on Family Dynamics for Enterprise Family Members

In our conversations with members of enterprise families, it often becomes apparent that despite good governance, a family charter, a well-functioning family office, and a profitable family business, unspoken and simmering issues and underlying tensions exist within the family. Not all family members feel acknowledged or recognized. These dynamic needs attention because it can lead to undesirable behavior that significantly impacts the family system and, consequently, the family business. These dynamics are exacerbated by external changes such as acquisitions and geopolitical tensions, as well as internal shifts like generational transitions.

At SpringBoard, we work with family members over two days to explore the deeper drivers within the family system and often bring to light the resistance to change. By making these causes visible, opportunities arise to better understand and address them. This approach leads to new insights among family members, resulting in greater confidence in their actions and sustainable positive changes within the family system.
Take the time for reflection that leads to a deeper understanding of your family dynamics and join us for two days at Ashridge House in the United Kingdom, a former estate of the British royal family outside London. Here, in complete privacy and confidentiality, you can participate in a transformative program with a small group of carefully selected family members from other wealthy entrepreneurial families. Reflecting is about daring to listen to yourself and being open to experiencing family dynamics differently, which will lead to new insights.

The Program at Ashridge House in Four Steps

Our program is specially designed and tailored for family members of wealthy entrepreneurial families. The goal is to deeply explore your place and role within the family system, with a strong focus on the family dynamics in your family. This exclusive program is entirely dedicated to your experiences within the family system. You will not only discover new perspectives on your role and family dynamics but also understand how these affect the family system and, consequently, the family business.

Personal Introduction

Before we begin, we find it important to get to know each other and understand your question within the context of your family. This can be during a walk, a ride to your next appointment, or at your office. This meeting is crucial to ensure our collaboration will be fruitful and that we can make a difference in your quest for further understanding of your role within the family and/or family business.

Preparation for Our Program

Prior to the weekend at Ashridge House, we invite you to complete the BluePrint Scan online, which provides essential insights into your personal and professional behavior patterns. These insights enable us to further tailor the program to the core themes of your role within the family. In a discussion, we will review the results and allow for additional questions to arise that are relevant to you.

Two Days at Ashridge House

The program at Ashridge House offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the family dynamics of wealthy enterprise families. During these two days, we focus on exploring and understanding the conscious and unconscious dynamics within your family and how these dynamics can either hinder or promote collaboration.
Our experience shows that families are more than a collection of individuals; they are entities with their own life within a shared history. This complexity can lead to tensions and emotional discomforts, especially during major changes such as generational transitions. By acknowledging and understanding these dynamics, family members can learn to collaborate and communicate more effectively. During these days, we will explore five central issues:
  • Who feels part of the family and who does not, and how this affects the dynamics.
  • The balance between conformity and diversity within the family and how this tension can influence creativity and innovation.
  • How rivalry and cooperation within the family take shape and how this can be channelled constructively.
  • How safe family members feel to speak up and be vulnerable within the family context.
  • The roles family members take on and how these roles sometimes represent feelings that need to be shared by the entire family.
Through family constellations, interactive sessions, and reflective exercises, we will identify and discuss patterns and behaviours. There will be space for individual and collective reflection, walks, and moments of silence. This approach helps to gain new insights and develop strategies for a healthy and effective family dynamic. Our role is facilitative; we create a safe space where the emotional dimensions of family life can be discussed. With our knowledge and experience, we help family members understand each other better and work together more effectively. After these two days, family members will be able to fill their roles within the family system with new insights and confidence, leading to sustainable positive changes within the family and the family business.

After the Program

The collaboration continues after these two days. We will continue to work intensively to ensure that the insights and changes you have experienced are sustainable and fully integrated into your daily life. Our collaboration, tailored to your needs, can consist of a comprehensive monthly session, with the possibility of additional sessions if necessary. We are available for questions or reflections in between. This way, you will experience a transformation that is not only noticeable but also enduring.

Who You Will Work With

I, Ruud Hopstaken, have spent a large part of my career as an executive and supervisor, including within family businesses. After obtaining a Master in Executive Coaching from Ashridge Business School, I now guide family members with positions within the family and/or family business in realizing their ambitions. My education at the Tavistock Institute in London has further deepened my understanding of dynamics in boardrooms and within enterprise families. My experience as CEO of a family office for an enterprise family in the Netherlands has further contributed to this.
My goal is to provide family members with the space to discover their unique qualities freely and to acquire knowledge about (family) dynamics. My experience shows that they can often achieve much more than they think and do. This applies to you as well, regardless of what you have already achieved. My role is to calmly show you this and help you experience how to function more effectively within the ever-changing demands placed on you within both the family and the family business.
I understand the challenges you face because I have been in the same shoes as an executive and board member of large organizations, including family businesses. I also know the feeling of being 'lonely at the top' and what you are going through. This mutual understanding allows us to quickly get to the heart of the matter.
During my time as an executive, I simultaneously went through a personal and business crisis. During this difficult period, reflection helped me and brought me to where I am now. It gave me the freedom to make my own choices and realize my ambitions. I want to share this knowledge and experience with you and help you reflect meaningfully on your role within the family. This will help you understand what is important to you now, what questions need attention, and what your ambition is. After these two days, you will be able to shape and define your role with new insights.
